Samson’s folly

Judges 16:1-22. Three times Delilah betrayed him by asking Samson to reveal the secret of his strength and yet he continued to trust her until tragedy struck. Sounds too good to believe unless Samson was blinded by Delilah and lived recklessly or maybe he thought that she was playing with him…alarm bells should sound off earlier during the failed tests.

God-impossible make possible

Th: Gideon’s story in Judges 7-three hundred fighting men versus thousands Midianites ..impossible if not for God mighty hand in it to help. Same for the defeat of the Assyrian army-Hezekiah time.

On the side of God and obedience to His commands (full trust)-everything is possible.

Judges 6:1-40…Israelites did evil…severe oppression by the Midianites..invasion..ruined the crops..did not spare a living thing…cried out to the Lord…God raised up Gideon…reason God punished the Israelites vs 7-10.

Th: right to question from his heart; right to reason vs 13, vs 15; right to ask for a sign vs 17; found favour vs 17; offering to God vs 19; sign granted vs 21; vs 25 God’s command..Tear down your father’s altar to Baal…Gideon asked for sign to confirm that God really wanted him to save Israel vs 36..the two tests vs 36-40. Test 1-wool fleece wet from the dew, ground dry. Test 2-fleece dry, ground wet from the dew vs 39-40.

Covenants with God

Genesis 9:13-promises-rainbow; Exodus 19:5-covenant of the law-obedience… then out of all nations, you will be my treasured possession..; Deuteronomy 4:13..ten commandments his covenant…commanded you to follow; Psalm 103:17-18-obedience and God’s love; 2 Chronicles 13:5 covenant with King David; future kings to come from David’s lineage.

Hebrews 9:15-Christ-mediator of a new covenant..promised eternal inheritance..died as a ransom for many…to set free the sins committed under the first covenant..; Luke 22:19,20..cup…new covenant in my blood…; covenant of forgiveness and grace…invited to receive this gift of grace.

Joshua summary of the Lord’s goodness and his commitment to God at Shechem

Joshua 24:1-27-gave a historical account from Abraham’s father (Terah) to the conquered land of Canaanites, Hittites and many others as commanded by God in Deuteronomy 7-pay special attention to vs 2-to destroy them totally. Reflection: God can see the future troubles they would pose if not destroy totally; refer to Deuteronomy 7:4 and Judges 2:1-3. We as mere human beings cannot see the future (…,turn your sons away-Deuteronomy 7:4 and Judges 2:3) thorns in your sides and this act or command of genocide seems cruel to us at the time. Result of disobedience-God no longer help them-Judges 2:3..will not drive them out before you…

Also refer to Genesis 12:1-God’s promise to Abraham.

Isaiah 54, 55

Trees of the field

Refl: Isaiah 54-the future glory of Zion-the Lord is our Maker, husband/wife to widow, widower, teacher. With Him in our lives, we can lift our heads high. In righteousness you will be established. vs 14. He is our Redeemer and Protector. He may get angry for a moment but always has compassion with everlasting kindness. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord..vs 17.

Isaiah 55: Listen to Him; his thoughts are higher than ours, no empty words, 100% return to words spoken; even the trees of the field praises Him.

Seldom you get command, wisdom, deception (ruse), oath, mercy attributes all in one basket.

Command-to wipe out the Gibeonites vs 24

Wisdom & deception-ruse to save their lives; bettercbe servants than dead.

Oath-once given, cannot be revoked vs 15

Mercy-God desires committment to the oath and mercy in this situation.

Mistake-.. did not inquire of the Lord vs 17
